Gustbuster umbrella
DURHAM The University of New Hampshire and Franklin Pierce Law Center are in merger discussions in a move that could bring the state's only law school under the public umbrella.
Both schools have formed committees to look at how they could collaborate, but merger discussions remain in the early stages, presidents of each school said in a joint statement today.
The ramifications of merging Franklin Pierce, a private college in Concord, with the state's flagship public university, UNH, remain unclear, though UNH President Mark Huddleston said any merger would be cost-neutral to UNH.
UNH finished its last fiscal year with a multi-million dollar deficit and its current fiscal year is only slightly in the red after officials made a number of cuts at the university, buoying its financial standing. Pierce Law officials could not immediately be reached for comment this afternoon and that school's financial standing is unclear.
In their statement, Huddleston and Pierce Law President John Hutson praised one another's schools and said any merger would be done to benefit both sides
