On Wednesday morning, a former employee of Petters Co., Robert White of Excelsior, pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud and one count of illegal monetary transactions. White, 67, faces up to 22 years in prison, provided he cooperates with federal authorities.
White and federal prosecutors explained in court how he became caught up the scheme. Sometime in 1998, he said, Petters asked him to create a false bank statement that would be used to convince lenders that the transactions in which they were investing or loaning money for were legitimate. White complied and joined the Petters organization shortly thereafter, he said
Congressman Kenny Hulshof is proposing creating an inspector general position for the state of Missouri. If he is elected to the governor's seat, Hulshof says the I.G. will focus on issues that jeopardize state tax dollars.
You see these instances of fraud, abuse...I hesitate to use the word corruption, but I mean there are strong appearances of impropriety, Hulshof said, with the tobacco settlement that the attorney general fenagled a couple of years ago and his cronies were getting $3,000 an hour for very little legal work.
Hulshof says the inspector general will look at all departments that fall under the umbrella of the governor's Office of Administration, indirectly ties to the governor's office. The congressman says it will give the state auditor more flexibility.
The auditor, whom I have great respect for, will do routine audits of these offices, but absent those audits, why not have a completely non-partisan independent, inspector general, Hulshof said. I think a dozen or states or so across the country have it, not selected by the governor, in fact having really no connection to the governor
