Imprinted umbrella
One of the reasons the parade committee has stayed away from a December parade is because it can get too cold. But Blahey said the rain wasnt about to dampen the spirits of the many, many people it takes to put on the parade.
You have to stay optimistic in the parade business, Blahey said. As they say, the parade must go on.
And go on it did.
Making their way through the streets of Timmins, floats decorated with holiday feasts, storytelling and tradition all led the line of floats that eventually ended with the St. Nicholas himself, covered in a large umbrella, just in case.
The current parade committee has been together as a group for nearly 20 years, and the parade itself has seen a few changes over the years. In addition to becoming a November event, eight years ago it was decided to move the event from the afternoon to evening.
December is a strong retail month for local businesses, Blahey said, explaining another reason for the change in dates
He would usually spend the night here and enjoy the company of his Hillsboro friends. Mr. Lincoln did represent clients in the area and tried cases in the Courthouse. According to historical records, in 1858 he gave a two-hour speech at the fairgrounds, now the Beckemeyer School campus, inside a circus tent while it was raining.'Last week a committee of volunteers organized by Dagon approved McClarey's proposed design for the Hillsboro statue.'I envision Lincoln in bronze examining a broadside of the 1858 Hillsboro circus,' said McClarey. 'He has just arrived in town having put down his travel bag and umbrella. His demeanor is one of gleeful expectation of the event. He might be leaning backward so as to get the kinks out of his back from the long buggy ride from Springfield.'
