Texas Tech Athletics announced a new partnership designating Under Armour as Tech's exclusive performance footwear and apparel outfitter on Monday in the Masked Rider Lobby.
The partnership includes a five-year, $11 million agreement allowing Under Armour to provide uniforms, apparel and footwear for all 17 varsity athletic teams at Tech.
Just the way football has been for the past three years, each team will be fully equipped with Under Armour gear beginning in July 2009. Furthermore, the agreement entails an annual product allowance, rights fee, marketing entitlements, event tickets and retail licensing rights.
Tech Athletic Director Gerald Myers said it's a pleasure to have every team 'under the same umbrella' after most coaches and teams were represented by different companies such as Reebok, Adidas or Nike.
'We've been working on this agreement for several months,' he said. 'All of our teams were under different contracts prior to our agreement with football three years ago, and we didn't really have the opportunity to pull everybody under one mark with Under Armour until beginning next year, the 2009 season.'
Walker Jones, the director of college sports marketing for Under Armour, said Under Armour and only eight other schools have an all-school or multi-school agreement, but across the country he said there are 265 individual collegiate teams under contracts involving footwear or apparel.
Jones listed Maryland, South Carolina, South Florida, Auburn, Tech, Utah, Hawaii and Boston College as schools having an agreement similar to the one announced Monday. He said other schools have approached Under Armour in hopes of getting a deal of this magnitude done, but the offers were turned down because Tech was the only school 'on the docket for this year.'
The reason Under Armour keeps its list of schools so tight, Jones said, is because it enables the possibility of flexible, personal service. He added that if Under Armour went out and signed these types of agreements with 60 or 70 schools, it would eliminate the characteristics that make the company so unique.
'We don't wanna get much bigger than that,' Jones said
